"Are Freelancer and Virtual Assistant the same thing? The LinkedIn labels confuse me."

Common question from new BFF learners

They are not the same. Both can be remote, both can involve Filipino workers and international clients, but the business model is different. Understanding the difference gives you clarity on rates, contract structure, and which jobs to apply for. Today we will compare the two paths.

The wrong question vs the right question

Wrong question: "Which pays more, freelancer or VA?"

Better question: "Which business model fits my current lifestyle, financial situation, and career goal?"

The third option

Beyond Freelancer and VA, there is also a Specialized Skill option: SDR, Account Manager, Customer Success, Content Marketer, and similar roles. It's common to start as a Generalist VA, drift into Freelancer projects, then evolve into a Specialized Skill (Content Marketing, SDR, Bookkeeping, etc.). You are not stuck with your first label. But you need to choose one direction for the next 90 days so your learning and job applications stay focused.

The "Generalist VA" trap

Saying "I can do everything: SMM, admin, design, video editing" feels like offering a buffet to the hiring manager. It does not make one clear reason to hire you. Choose a wedge. Pick the one thing you are best at. Let the other five skills become bonuses. That is what a polished freelancer does from day one.

  1. Score yourself on 5 questions (1-10 each):
    • I need stable monthly income (1 = no, 10 = absolutely)
    • I prefer ongoing client relationships over project bursts
    • I have a specific specialty I can charge premium for
    • I'm willing to bid on platforms vs direct hire
    • I value predictability over upside potential
  2. Sum the score. 30-40 = VA path · 20-29 = Freelancer · 10-19 = Specialized Skill
  3. Write your label. "[Name] · [Wedge] · [Path]" for example: "Maricel Santos · Customer Support VA · Retainer-based."
  4. Update your LinkedIn headline. Match the label. Your headline is the first filter.
  5. Check current job listings for that path. Open BFF Job List filtered to your path's Role Category. See what's available NOW.

VA path is the bridge. Replicate BPO discipline in remote retainer.

  1. Default to VA path. Customer Service, Admin, Inbox VA. Familiar muscle, retainer-stable income.
  2. Target OnlineJobs.ph. PH-eligible, retainer-friendly, BPO-trained-favored.
  3. Highlight shift availability in profile. 293 of 641 candidates had night-shift OK but didn't mention it. You should.
🎨 The Creative Specialist~15% · proceed ~70%

Freelancer path natural. Project-based per creative deliverable.

Do this week
  1. Default to Freelancer path. Per-project pricing. Set minimum project rate now: ₱5K floor, ₱20K target.
  2. Target Upwork + direct outreach via portfolio. OnlineJobs.ph too low-rate for creative.
  3. Consider hybrid: 1 retainer + project work. The retainer gives you base income. Projects give you upside.
🛒 The Solo Entrepreneur~15% · proceed ~55%

VA or Specialized Skill, depends on hours.

Do this week
  1. Part-time VA path if running business simultaneously. 20 hrs/week max. Don't overcommit.
  2. Full-time Specialized Skill if exiting business. E-commerce Manager, Operations Specialist, Marketing Lead.
  3. Frame as "Operations VA for E-commerce SMEs." Your shop background is the differentiator.
📋 The Generalist Admin~10% · proceed ~50%

VA path is the natural fit. Pick a wedge inside.

Do this week
  1. Default to VA path with a wedge. Executive Assistant, Bookkeeping VA, Calendar Coordinator. Pick one.
  2. Apply to retainer-only listings. Sa OnlineJobs.ph, filter "Full Time" or "Part Time" (not "One-Time Job").
  3. Quote monthly, not hourly. ₱25K/month flat reads more senior than ₱150/hour.

No experience to lean on. VA path is the lowest-friction entry.

Do this week
  1. Default to VA path. Customer Support, Data Entry, Admin. Lowest barrier to first client.
  2. Don't claim Freelancer / Specialized Skill yet. Earn the label after 6 months of VA work.
  3. Apply only to Newbie Friendly + No Calls tabs. Filter explicitly to entry roles.
