The interview where the contract is decided. Here is the prep routine that lets you walk in calm and ready.

Length: 8 minutes For: anyone with a client interview coming up Updated: 2026-06-24 (v1) Part of: Research the Client First

"I prepare for the work, but I never really prepare for the interview itself. I just hope it goes well."

Hope is not a plan

The client interview is the meeting that decides the job. It deserves a real, simple plan. You do not need to be a perfect talker. You need to be the prepared one. Here is exactly what to ready.

The wrong question vs the right question

Wrong question: "How do I sound impressive on the call?"

Better question: "What can I prepare so I walk in fitting and calm?"

Impressive fades. Prepared and fitting wins, because it shows the client you already understand them.

Prepare these five things

Goal: walk in ready, not hoping.

1. The client
Do the background check. Know what they do, their customer, their field. Speak their language.
2. Your interests answer
Prepare a true "tell me about your hobbies" answer that also makes the client like you and fits their world.
3. Your two best wins
Pick two logged wins most relevant to this client, ready to mention naturally.
4. Two questions to ask
Smart questions about their goals show you are already thinking like a teammate.
5. The setup
Quiet space, working camera and mic, good light, a glass of water. Remove what you can control.
The mindset that holds it together

Control what you can, then give your best. You cannot control every nerve or surprise on the day. You can control whether you understood the client and prepared your answers. Do that, and the rest gets much easier.

Practice. Prepare for one real interview.

  • Did the client background check
  • Wrote a true interests answer that fits them
  • Picked two relevant wins to mention
  • Prepared two questions to ask
  • Checked my space, camera, mic, and light

Next step

Hold steady, BFF Team. We keep going together.
