How to Use ChatGPT to Analyze Competitor Articles

Gather the best pieces, ask the right question, and turn the answer into content pillars.

Length: 6 minutes For: anyone who wants the exact prompts Updated: 2026-06-24 (v1) Part of: AI Competitor Analysis

"I get the idea of analyzing competitors with AI. I just do not know what to actually paste and ask."

The doing, made concrete

The short answer: collect a competitor's top articles, paste them into ChatGPT, and ask it to explain what themes and angles make them work and what is missing. This is exactly what I did: I went to a competitor's site, found their top articles, and asked ChatGPT to analyze them so I could understand what content to create.

The three-prompt flow

Goal: turn competitor content into pillars.

1. Gather and paste
Collect 3 to 5 of a competitor's best articles. Paste the text or key parts. Say: "These are top-performing competitor articles."
2. Ask why they work
"What themes, angles, and formats make these perform? Why would the audience engage?"
3. Ask for gaps and pillars
"What topics are missing that a competitor could own? Group the winning themes into three content pillars."
The habit that makes the answer good

Give it real content and ask specific questions. Vague input gives a vague answer. Real articles plus a precise question gives you patterns you can actually use. Then you decide which pillars fit your client.

Practice. Run the three prompts.

  • Gathered 3 to 5 top competitor articles
  • Asked ChatGPT why they perform
  • Asked for gaps and three content pillars
  • Chose the pillars that fit my client
